This website presents the RIVM top projects, as an introduction to the complexity and innovative nature of our work. Many projects are carried out in close collaboration with our partners, and have a positive impact on our society.
For more than 100 years, our institute has been protecting and improving public health and the quality of the environment. Leading the way to a healthy population in a healthy society, we work on issues concerning infectious diseases, immunisation, healthy living, food and nutrition, environment and safety. We carry out research, provide advice, and direct and implement prevention and control measures.
We have been doing this work for a long time but the way in which we work has changed dramatically over the years. The world around us is moving ever faster. This means that we need to continually innovate in order to meet future needs. We are developing new knowledge and expertise to address complex challenges and to take advantage of new opportunities. One example is the Round Tables on emerging infectious diseases that require timely response, and another is the Public Health Status and Forecast Report, which sketches future scenarios for public health based on discussions with stakeholders. We do not work alone. We are continually building new networks and other forms of cooperation.
Our relationship with citizens is also changing as they become more empowered, which in turn has consequences for the way in which we communicate, interactively and with the use of social media.
Many of the projects and products presented in this booklet, such as iSPEX and Healthy Urban Living, are generated from our Strategic Programme RIVM (SPR), which is directed to responding to key future issues and comprises many innovative projects. The top projects are a selection from the many projects and products on which the people at RIVM work with passion and enthusiasm.
Through foresight and a timely response, RIVM safeguards public health and the environment.’
